๐ŸŽฌ The Movievaures Time Machine โ€“ Freaky Friday (2003)

Hello Time Travelers! Iโ€™m back!  Today, Iโ€™m stepping into the 2000s again with a movie that couldnโ€™t be more relevant right now: Freaky Friday, the beloved 2003 body-swap comedy starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. Why this choice? Well, with the sequel finally being released this summer, I thought it was the perfect occasion to revisit the first one and see if it still holds up.

Spoiler alert: it absolutely does.

๐Ÿ” Non-Spoiler Overview

For those whoโ€™ve never seen it, Freaky Friday follows a mother and daughter constantly clashing about, wellโ€ฆ everything. One fateful evening, thanks to a mysterious fortune cookie, they wake up having swapped bodies. Chaos, hilarity, and ultimately a better understanding of each otherโ€™s lives ensue.

Itโ€™s a classic trope, but this 2003 version worked especially well because of its cast and its very 2000s vibe.

๐Ÿ’ฅ What Still Works Today

  • The duo of Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis: both give absolutely committed performances. Curtis in particular shines as a teenager trapped in her momโ€™s body, and Lohan is equally convincing the other way around. Their chemistry carries the film.
  • The humor: lighthearted, silly, and timeless enough that it still makes you laugh.
  • The message: empathy across generations. Itโ€™s simple, but still relevant today โ€” maybe even more in an era where parents and teens seem worlds apart.

And letโ€™s be honest, the movie also has that nostalgic charm of the 2000s: the outfits, the music, the slightly exaggerated teen angstโ€ฆ itโ€™s like opening a time capsule.

โš–๏ธ Whatโ€™s a Bit Dated

Of course, some elements are very much of their time. The pop-punk soundtrack screams early 2000s (which is a plus for nostalgia, but might feel cringy for some). Some jokes are also a bit clichรฉ now. Still, these quirks are part of its identity and donโ€™t take away from the fun.

โŒ› The Movievaures Time Machine Verdict

โœ… Passed

Freaky Friday is a perfect example of a family comedy that stands the test of time. Itโ€™s funny, heartfelt, and charming, and both leads gave it their all. Watching it today feels like both revisiting a piece of childhood and realizing that its message is still very universal.

With the sequel coming out this summer, itโ€™s the perfect time to rewatch this gem โ€” and honestly, I canโ€™t wait to see Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reunite.
