The Perfect Couple: A Review of Netflix’s Latest Mystery Drama

Welcome back, My Movievaures! Today, we’re diving into Netflix’s newest mystery drama miniseries, The Perfect Couple. Adapted from Elin Hilderbrand’s 2018 novel, this star-studded show has been on everyone’s radar since its release in September 2024. Created by Jenna Lamia and directed by Susanne Bier, this series promised to deliver suspense, intrigue, and scandal. Featuring big names like Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, and Eve Hewson, it quickly became a top show on Netflix. But does it live up to the hype? Keep reading for a deep dive, with a spoiler-free section for those still debating whether to watch.

The Perfect Couple revolves around a high-profile wedding in Nantucket that takes a dark turn when a shocking death occurs. What was supposed to be a picturesque ceremony at the Winbury family’s estate unravels into a mystery as every character becomes a potential suspect. The series explores the intricate relationships within the wealthy Winbury family, the soon-to-be-wed couple, and their inner circle, all while a murder investigation looms over their heads.

The Perfect Couple stays true to its mystery roots with a high-society murder, multiple red herrings, and character twists that make you question everyone’s motives. Amelia, the bride-to-be (played by Eve Hewson), and her fiancé Benji (Billy Howle) find themselves in the middle of this family drama that spirals out of control. Nicole Kidman plays Greer Winbury, the controlling and enigmatic matriarch, whose presence looms large over the series.

Kidman’s performance is impressive, as always, but—here’s where my issue comes in—it feels like déjà vu. Greer, her character, echoes her previous roles from Big Little Lies and The Undoing. She’s once again the wealthy, complicated woman whose facade crumbles as dark secrets emerge. While Kidman is undoubtedly a brilliant actress, the character’s resemblance to her earlier portrayals leaves little room for originality. That’s not to say the series is bad—it’s just a bit too familiar.

Since its premiere on September 5, The Perfect Couple has garnered mixed reviews. On one hand, audiences praised the show for its high production value, gripping mystery, and standout performances, particularly from Dakota Fanning, who portrays the complex Abby. Her character’s mix of humor and danger added a fresh dynamic to the otherwise familiar plot. Critics, however, were quick to point out that the show’s tone often felt inconsistent, with too much reliance on the star power of its cast rather than developing unique or groundbreaking elements.

Despite this, the show does have its redeeming qualities. The twists, although somewhat predictable, are still fun to watch unfold, and there’s something satisfying about the dark secrets of a seemingly perfect family being exposed one by one. I was also impressed by the ensemble cast, especially Eve Hewson, who gives a layered performance as Amelia. The show delves into her character’s complex emotions, offering more depth than I expected. However, if you’re a regular viewer of Netflix’s mystery or true crime dramas, you might find the show lacking in novelty. It’s well-executed but feels more like a blend of Big Little Lies and The White Lotus rather than something truly original. I found myself enjoying the show for what it was but not necessarily excited by it.

Overall, The Perfect Couple is an enjoyable, binge-worthy series for mystery lovers, but don’t expect groundbreaking storytelling. What did you think of The Perfect Couple? Were you surprised by the twists, or did it feel like a repeat of previous mystery dramas?
