Furiosa takes us back to the chaotic desert wasteland, 15 to 20 years before the events of Mad Max: Fury Road. This time, the story centers on the young Furiosa, portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy, and her harrowing journey from captivity to becoming one of the fiercest warriors in the wasteland. The film follows her life from being kidnapped by the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) to her eventual rise as a lieutenant under the ruthless Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme)

The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Browne as younger versions of Furiosa, originally played by Charlize Theron. Alongside them, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke deliver powerful performances that enrich the narrative. The plot traces Furiosa’s journey through a brutal world where resources are scarce, and survival often means taking extreme measures. After her abduction, Furiosa is thrust into a life of servitude under Dementus, enduring years of hardship before she begins her rise within the ranks of Immortan Joe’s army. Her path is fraught with danger, betrayal, and loss, leading to a climactic showdown that cements her legacy in the Mad Max universe.

Furiosa premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 15, 2024, and received positive reviews from critics. Despite its critical acclaim, the film’s $110 million box office draw in its first two weeks has been viewed as underwhelming compared to its $168 million budget. However, this doesn’t diminish its impact on audiences and critics alike. According to Rotten Tomatoes, 90% of 301 critics’ reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.9/10. Metacritic assigned the film a score of 79 out of 100, indicating “generally favorable” reviews. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of “B+”, and PostTrak reports an average of 4 1/2 stars out of 5, with 70% of viewers saying they would definitely recommend it.

Furiosa is an amazing experience from beginning to end. Anya Taylor-Joy does an incredible job portraying this now legendary character. While it may not be as action-packed as Mad Max: Fury Road, this is not a drawback. The story is truly compelling, the acting perfect, and the characters are just as incredible as before. I was disappointed that this movie is not receiving the praise it deserves. By the end, I was so excited that I rewatched Fury Road straightaway.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a must-watch for fans of the franchise and newcomers alike.
