Hello, My Movievaures! Today, I’ll be writing about 1899, one of the best Netflix shows of 2022. As you may know, Dark is one of my favorite shows of all time. So when I discovered that the creators of this amazing show were going to release a new one on Netflix I was more than thrilled. Was it up to my expectations? Well, first, let’s get to the non-spoilers part:

A group of people of several nationalities gets caught up in an agonizing mystery while traveling on a steamship to New York. As they all seem like random strangers at first, they all appear to have a connection that will force them to face their past and that will question their own sense of reality.

This was a necessary short summary because it is too easy to spoil the mystery. Well, in a certain way because the entire season 1 only opens to even more questions and doubts by the end of it. It might be a bit frustrating at first, but when you think about it is even more exciting when you see how this first season ends. It builds up to a series of theories and as a viewer, it is really engaging.

In any case, even if you don’t have all the answers it is still fascinating to get to know each character’s background and see how they interact with each other. You must see this show in the original version because each character speaks in a different language, complicating their conversations but allowing the actors to make some great interpretations. Their relationship benefits from it, even though it is not always very convincing on how some of them start and move some fast, but overall it works.

The fact that they are also trapped in the boat helps with the anxiety they feel adding up to the urgency they constantly live to survive and unravel the big secret that led them to that ship. Maura and Eyk’s relationship is probably the most interesting one, not only because of their love interest tension but because of their shared traumas. And most of this show is about the characters’ traumas and how they impacted their choices and present life.

In short, 1899 had everything to become the next big mystery show on Netflix. Unfortunately, the creators confirmed seasons 2 and 3 were canceled. This is a huge disappointment because this story has so much potential. Let’s hope this will change in the future, but in any case, I will recommend watching this show, for the experience but also to give it more visbility. This is all for today My Movievaures! Let me know in the comments down below your thoughts on the show. I’ll be back next week but in the meantime don’t forget to follow me on Instagram (the_moveivaures).
