Hello, My Movievaures! I hope you had a great week. I’m back with a new article on a quite particular movie: The Good Nurse. This Netflix movie was released in September of this year and without being one of my most expected movies of 2022, I was actually looking forward to it. I had other priorities, none of the less I really wanted to see the Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne duo on screen, so I recently downloaded the movie to watch it on the train back home. So…was it good? Well, let’s get to the non-spoilers part:

The Good Nurse follows the relationship between Amy Loughren and Charles Cullen, two nurses working together who developed a strong friendship after some personal challenges. However, Amy’s life will be turned upside down, when she discovers her best friend and colleague is suspected of the murder of dozens of patients over a long period of time in different hospitals. As she tries to unravel the truth, she will find herself isolated and at risk of losing her job, but also only support.

I will get straight to the point: if you haven’t watched this movie you haven’t missed a bit. It is not awful, yet it is absolutely forgettable. Eddie Redmayne is a great actor in my opinion so clearly, he was good in this role too, as well as Jessica Chastain, but it is not the highlight of their career far from that. It is not that the characters are not intriguing, of course, they are, but I believe something was missing while telling this awful and true story.

Indeed, this is all based on real events and while everything surrounding it is tragic and frustrating I didn’t feel that way at all while watching this movie. It’s probably quite hard to say this but I was bored. I don’t think the writers managed to convey the anguish, doubts, and anger Amy Loughren really felt when she discovers the horrific truth. It was also strange how they never tried to understand the reasons behind these murders. Probably because the real Charles Cullen never gave one, but it just seems awkward to put that fact there and just move forward with the detective plot.
In short, while managing to show a different side to the profession and how difficult it is for nurses in the United States to make ends meet, The Good Nurse just feels like yet another movie taking advantage of the serial killer trend. The actors are good, but not great in these roles and even if objectively the stakes are high for everyone, there is no sense of urgency or danger for the main characters. The fact that it was highlighted how hospitals across states covered in a way this murders in order to protect themselves are outraging, especially knowing they didn’t receive any punishment at all. However, that’s a real fact and the movie once again doesn’t manage to create any real emotions from the viewer. Anyways, this is all for today My Movievaures! Let me know in the comments your thoughts on this article. I’ll be back next week with a new review!
