The Matrix Resurrections

Hello, My Movievaures! A new year has started, but before putting 2021 aside I would like to come back to one of the most criticized movies of the end of last year: The Matrix Resurrections. When it was announced there was going to be a fourth Matrix movie there was a big controversy. Some fans were reluctant to it and others seemed quite excited to see Neo again on screen. To be honest when I learned about it I didn’t know what to think, other than not to expect too much from it. So, what are my thoughts after seeing it? Let’s get into it!

(SPOILERS ON THE MATRIX UNIVERSE AHEAD) Resurrections is the continuation of The Matrix Revolutions which finished with Neo and Trinity’s death after saving Zion from total obliteration by the machines. Many people were already complaining saying that it was a shame that Lana Wachowski decided to pursue the storyline and disturb this tragic but heroic ending. what’s funny to me is that I remember many fans complaining about Revolutions’ end scene so… There will always be haters.

So Neo and Trinity are not dead, and once again prisoners of The Matrix. As it was teased in the trailers, there was no big reveal there, however I was looking forward to the treatment of this new storyline. I actually quite enjoyed how Meta some references were and the whole plot about The Matrix being a videogame. Of course, as a big fan of this universe, I really enjoyed the hints to the previous movies: the combat moves, some of the dialogue and the resurface of previous characters or their descendants.

We all knew it was going to be 100% fan service, as Spider-Man No Way Home was. Was it perfect? Clearly not, but I think once again people were expecting too much from this new movie. Some of the references are clumsy and many of the new characters feel like copies of what we had before, but in overall I think it was an entertaining experience. I had more trouble enjoying the last part of the movie that I found a bit too cliché, but for the rest I think the scenario made sense and it was nice seeing our beloved couple reunited again.

In short, I think the hate I saw on the Internet comes mainly from too high expectations rather than by a a bad writing. Of course, Resurrections was never going to be as good as the first Matrix movie, but I don’t get how some people thought it should’ve been. It is entertaining enough and has a good fan service dose to remember how good it was when we saw Neo for the first time stop some bullets with his hands.
