Hello My Movievaures! I hope you are doing well and you had a good start of the week! I’m back with an article on one of the most horrifying TV show anthologies: American Horror Story. I bet you’ve already heard about this show, as we are already at the tenth season and even a spin-off (American Horror Stories). But have you ever watched it? Well if it is not the case maybe this article will make you want to, and if you have this will be a good recap of why you spent so many hours scaring yourself un purpose. So let’s get into it!

American Horror Story has clearly become a concept today. However, it wasn’t obvious from the first season, even though it was an incredible one. Indeed, Murder House released in 2011 was quite a revelation. The storyline was quite simple, yet efficient: an American family moves to a hunted house where atrocious murders were committed. Of course, they encounter many of the ghosts who are trapped eternally in the house and who will change their lives forever. Murder House was such a sensation that the concept was used again in the American Horror Stories spin-off and was referenced in many other seasons of the show.

The success was not only based on the fact that it is, indeed, a very frightening show. American Horror Story brought back the notion of horror on TV, with particular disturbed scenes, awful sounds that give you the creeps and blood, A LOT OF BLOOD. There is no escape, you know one way or another the characters will suffer either psychological trauma, physical violence, or both. Even if you think you would have fled that place or that situation, you actually realize that you would have been tricked exactly as the characters are.

Thus, American Horror Story doesn’t try to be a mysterious and poetic scary show as can be The Haunting of Hill House. This show will go straight to your deepest fears, always reworking the usual concepts of this genre: ghosts, serial killers, clown murderers, witches, asylums, vampires and even aliens. The show plays a lot with distorted bodies, unsettling sexual fantasies, cringe noises, jump scares of all kinds and clear violence never seen before on TV. Each season has its particularities and themes, the second one based on an Asylum, the third one on witches and so on, so don’t worry, you’ll find one that will get under your skin. Mine was Asylum for sure.

But how this show became such a phenomenon? Well, as I said before the first season was a success as it was quite new for us, horror movies’ fans to see such a degree of violence and tormented characters in TV. The plot was also amazingly built, surprising us until the very last episode giving us a bad feeling of unfinished business, such as the ghosts of the house. But what we didn’t realized, when they announced there will be a second season was that it will always stay that way, as we were going to leave behind those characters to focus on a new story.

There are two main benefits to this: they will never fall into the second season trap where the quality goes down and we get bored by a bad storyline. The second one being able to revisit many different horrific legends and create an original plot for each season. Moreover, one of the most representative things of this anthologies are the actors behind the amazing characters. Indeed, every season has new personas played by the same actors from the previous one. Therefore, their performance is essential and for most of them absolutely magnificent.

In short, these anthologies series are violent, horrific and splendid. The actors have been amazing at portraying so many different characters, with completely disparate plots playing with our deepest fears. This show is not for everyone, that’s for sure, as it cannot be watched by sensitive people who do not appreciate a good jump scare. However, for the rest, each season will be a good addition into your library of horrors and you will find your favorite in one of the tenth seasons. Right now, that last one is being released and each week we will have our share of blood.
