The Falcon and the Winter soldier

Hello My Movievaures! I hope you had an amazing week! I’m soooo excited to be back with an article on one of the most expected shows of the year: The Falcon and the Winter soldier. We all know, Disney are giving their all and putting the adequate budget to move forward on this 4th phase of the Marvel Universe. After Wanda Vision, the next step was putting together this strange and fantastic duo on screen. Oh gosh, how right they were to do that! Let’s get into it. But first, there will be some spoilers in regards to the context of the show and especially on Avengers, Endgame finale.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Interest Has Collapsed

Even thought, the events take place in the same timeline and world as Wanda Vision, it looks like a total different universe. But of course, this was made on purpose to really separate both stories, that only have in common the fact of living the consequences of Thanos’ snap and the following events. However, in The Falcon and The Winter soldier the afterwards effects of half of the population coming back after disappearing for about 3 years are much more explained and visualized than in Wanda Vision.

Indeed, the world is now left without Iron Man and Captain America, both leading figures of peace and unity. The world has also been turned upside down as by having half of the universe disappear the ressources were actually better distributed and coming back from that created conflict zones and displaced populations against their will. Thus, winning against Thanos was clearly not the end of the story and our beloved characters are going to face the repercussions of all the events of Avengers: Endgame.

This is where The Falcon (aka Sam Wilson) and The Winter Soldier (Bucky Barnes) make their appearances. Both have been truly impacted by Steve Rogers’ death, as a friend and a symbol. Indeed, at the end of Avengers Endgame Steve decided to give his shield to Sam, and in a way giving him the role of the new captain America. However, as we will see on the show, this simple but symbolic gesture will have big repercussions on Sam’s life, as well as Bucky’s and even on the rest of the world.

Therefore, The Falcon and the Winter soldier will address some existing topics but with much straightforwardness such as racism, ideology, terrorism, imperialism and identity. We will see how difficult it is, for a black man in America to represent a symbol of unity, as well as how Steve’s and Bucky’s naivety will be highlighted when confronted to this matter. We will also learn more about how many people actually have benefited from Thanos snap and how they are now the losers of the new world.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Is a 1980s Buddy Action Movie as MCU Streaming Series - Review

However, even though this show is more profound than some of the Marvel’s movies, we still have our old good action scenes and funny dialogues. It is closer to what we know, than Wanda Vision was, and in a way it is also really good as I know many people were quite disturbed with WV’s format. In any case, the combats are pretty good, with a high ressemblance to what we have seen in movies like Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The flying scenes are also quite impressive and even though the kind of powers we see here are less spectacular than Magic, or nuclear power (CF: Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Thor) it is still very satisfying to watch on screen.

To finish, I will point out the dynamic between Sam and Bucky that I actually quite enjoyed. I was afraid it was going to be a cliché of two guys kind of fighting each other while helping each other out. However, in the end none of them are the stereotype we could have expect them to become and their pseudo friendship is really interesting as what unites them is the past memory of a lost friend and the common goal to live up to his expectations.

In short, The Falcon and the Winter soldier is a very good show, less original than Wanda Vision but without falling into the simple expectations we could have had on any Marvel show. The action scenes, the characters’ development and the plot are consistent, enjoyable and impressive. I really enjoyed watching this duo on screen as well as the anti-heroes and new characters that appeared on screen, as well as some others we’ve already met in the past. I’m really excited to see what’s coming next in the fourth phase.
