Hello My Movievaures! I hope you had an amazing week and enjoyed my last week’s article on Behind Her Eyes. I’m back today with a totally different type of show, that I fell in love with a few weeks ago: The Expanse. Maybe some of you have heard about it, but I believe not many as unfortunately is not a quite known show. But it absolutely should and let me tell you why! Let’s get into it.

The Expanse is a SCIFI TV Show released in 2015 and currently going into its sixth season, available on Amazon Prime. I’ve heard about it a few times from now and then, but never gave it a chance as I’m quite skeptical of Sci-fi shows and their quality. Of course, I’m not talking about shows like The Mandalorian or The Clone Wars as they both come from a universe I love, and I was absolutely going to watch it. However, every time I gave its chance to a sci-fi show, I was always disappointed either by the special effects, the storyline or the acting. Well, let me tell you that I was completely right to start watching the Expanse and I binge watched the 5 seasons in less than 9 days.

This show has a quite complex and intriguing plot, as it is based on a series of novels of the same name. If I had to summarize, I will say that: The Expanse is the story of Humanity, in a hundred of years or so in the future, where we have managed to democratize space travel and have colonized the solar system. Mars has become an independent government, and tensions have arisen between factions from Earth, Mars and what they now call the Belt; a community of people born in space and who have never lived in a planet before. This show is amazing as it combines geopolitical affairs, interstellar voyages, alien life themes as well as the personal stories and backgrounds of our main characters. Not only this gives us a very convincing view of what our future could be in terms of space travelling and colonialism, but also managed to create space for a good character development that always fit the contemporary issues humanity is facing.

Of course, the special effects are absolutely amazing. It is even hard to believe this is a show as it has the quality of a good SCI-FI movie. The credibility of it is also incredible. Of course, I’m not a scientist, but everything seems to have a good and rational explanation: how gravity works on the spaceships; how people who were born on space are physiologically different from those born on planets; how time works in space, etc.… Moreover, you might think that with 5 seasons already some of the episodes could be uninteresting or quite futile. However, in my opinion the rhythm of the show is on point. I didn’t feel any kind of boredom or repetition and actually found that there was a good balance between drama, action scenes, political stakes, pure sci-fi and characters’ storylines (love, friendship, family, past…).

Something else that I really enjoyed is the lack of clichés this show has. I would say that maybe the main character – James Holden (AKA Steven Strait) could seem quite a typical stereotype of the hero from starters. However, as I said before, the character development is really good in this show and by the end of the first season you are quite fond of every main character, especially those travelling in the Roci (main spaceship): Alex Kamal, Amos Burton, Naomi Nagata and of course James Holden. Each one of them bring something special and important to the storyline and seeing their bond getting stronger episode per episode is very enjoyable to watch. To be honest, my favorite character is Amos, but I’ll let you watch the show to discover why!

In short, The Expanse is my favorite SCI-FI show ever, and is, for sure, on my top 10 of favorite shows ever. The quality is exceptional, from the storyline, the acting, the special effects and the rhythm. It is not a surprise to see that it had a 94% grade on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.5/10 on IMDb. Not many people are talking about this show and it is unfortunate. I can understand SCI-FI is not for everyone, but let me tell you, this show is more than space travel and aliens. It is a whole prediction of how Humanity could evolve. I’m so excited to watch season 6, that should be released by the end of the year.
